ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to study the population structure of the Cattle Conservation Nucleos Curraleiro Pé Duro of the Instituto Nacional do Semiárido (NCP_INSA) based on pedigree data. Genealogical information from 338 animals registered in the period from 1991 to 2019 was used. The number of founding animals (Nf), the effective number of founders (fe), effective number of ancestors (fa), inbreeding coefficient (F), and average relatedness coefficient (AR), in addition to Fis, Fit and Fst were estimated. It was possible to identify ancestors up to the third generation, with an increase in information over the generations. Of the total pedigree information evaluated, 90.53% had the identification of the father and mother. The effective size of the population was smaller than those proposed by FAO, suggesting the need to redefine the herd management and genetic management plan strategies, promoting gene flow and breed expansion.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Pathophysiological mechanisms involved in orofacial pain and their relationship with emotional disorders have emerged as an important research area for multidisciplinary studies. In particular, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have been evaluated clinically from both physiological and psychological perspectives. We hypothesized that an altered neuronal activity occurs in the amygdala and the dorsal raphe nucleus (DR), encephalic regions involved in the modulation of painful and emotional information. Adult male Wistar rats were used in an experimental complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation model. CFA was applied for 1 or 10 days, and the animals were euthanized for brain samples dissection for FosB/ΔFosB and parvalbumin (PV) immunostaining. Our results were consistent in showing that the amygdala and DR were activated in the persistent inflammatory phase (10 days) and that the expression of PV+ interneurons in the amygdala was decreased. In contrast, in the DR, the expression of PV+ interneurons was increased in persistent states of CFA-induced TMJ inflammation. Moreover, at 10 days of inflammation, there was an increased co-localization of PV+ and FosB/ΔFosB+ neurons in the basolateral and central nucleus of the amygdala. Different nuclei of the amygdala, as well as portions of the DR, were activated in the persistent phase (10 days) of TMJ inflammation. In conclusion, altered activity of the amygdala and DR was detected during persistent inflammatory nociception in the temporomandibular joint. These regions may be essential for both sensory and affective dimensions of orofacial pain.

ABSTRACT

Paratuberculosis is a chronic and incurable disease that affects ruminants and other domestic animals. It is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) that may also be involved in some human diseases such as Crohn's disease, type 1 diabetes, sarcoidosis, multiple sclerosis, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of MAP DNA in samples of artisanal coalho cheese purchased in the State of Pernambuco. Forty samples of coalho cheese submitted to the Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) technique were analyzed for the detection of the MAP region IS900. 11 (27.5%) were positive with a mean of 195.9 MAP colony forming unit (CFU) per gram of each sample, with a minimum of 30.3 CFU/g and a maximum of 324.2 CFU/g. Thus, this type of cheese that is one of the most consumed in this region of Brazil constitutes a source of human exposure to MAP. Further research in this area should be performed to evaluate the viability of the bacteria in this cheese type.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the energy and nutritional value of the leaves of Moringa oleifera (MOL) for broilers. We used 90 male chicks, Cobb-500, with 14 days of age in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six repetitions of three birds. The treatments were: reference diet and 4 diets with substitution of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of the diet by reference sheet MOL. ABSTRACT

We evaluated diets with different percentages of non-detoxified castor bean (TM) in the induction of molt, with 120 Lohman LSL hens at 81 weeks of age being used, randomly allotted to four treatments with five replicates of six birds each. One of the treatments consisted in the induction of changes by the method of fasting for 11 days, and the others used diet switches, composed by mixing posture and TM diet in the amounts of 20, 30 and 40 percent for up to 21 days or until when the birds reach 23 percent weight loss. Significant differences were observed in erythrocytes, hematocrit, mean concentration of corpuscular hemoglobin, total protein in plasma, leukocytes and alanine aminotransferase measured during induction of changes, and the performance of birds after moulting, such as feed intake, percentage of laying, egg weight, egg mass and feed conversion. The quality of the eggs did not vary significantly among the methods evaluated. The use of forced molting diet containing 40 percent of TM promoted results similar to those obtained with the method of fasting, both feed intake and the percentage of egg, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion, as inherent quality of eggs, as the specific gravity, Haugh unit, yolk percentage, albumen and shell. However, minor changes in the values of erythrocytes, hematocrit and alanine aminotransferase were observed in the method above. The use of diets containing 40 percent change TM proved to be a viable alternative to the use of the fasting method...

ABSTRACT

We evaluated different levels of chlorine in the feed on the blood parameters and bone development of quail for meat production. 384 Italian quails were used at 1-49 days of age, distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and eight replicates of eight birds. The treatments consisted of isonutrient diets, except for the level of chlorine, which were 0.07, 0.12, 0.17, 0.22, 0.27 and 0.32%. After 49 days, two birds were selected per plot for the collection of blood and tibia. The pH and the concentration of Na, K and Cl in the blood and the length, diameter, weight, dry matter and ash, Seedor index, breaking strength and deformity of the tibia were evaluated. The chlorine levels in the diet did not significantly influence the pH, the concentrations of Na, Cl, K blood, length, diameter, weight, Seedor index, dry matter and ash, crack resistance and deformity of the tibia. As the results, the level of chloride can range from 0.07 to 0.32%, without changing the pH and the concentrations of Na, K and Cl in the blood and without a loss in bone quality.

ABSTRACT

Orofacial pain is a prevalent symptom in modern society. Some musculoskeletal orofacial pain is caused by temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This condition has a multi-factorial etiology, including emotional factors and alteration of the masticator muscle and temporomandibular joints (TMJs). TMJ inflammation is considered to be a cause of pain in patients with TMD. Extracellular proteolytic enzymes, specifically the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), have been shown to modulate inflammation and pain. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the expression and level of gelatinolytic activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the trigeminal ganglion are altered during different stages of temporomandibular inflammation, as determined by gelatin zymography. This study also evaluated whether mechanical allodynia and orofacial hyperalgesia, induced by the injection of complete Freund's adjuvant into the TMJ capsule, were altered by an MMP inhibitor (doxycycline, DOX). TMJ inflammation was measured by plasma extravasation in the periarticular tissue (Evans blue test) and infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils into the synovial fluid (myeloperoxidase enzyme quantification). MMP expression in the trigeminal ganglion was shown to vary during the phases of the inflammatory process. MMP-9 regulated the early phase and MMP-2 participated in the late phase of this process. Furthermore, increases in plasma extravasation in periarticular tissue and myeloperoxidase activity in the joint tissue, which occurred throughout the inflammation process, were diminished by treatment with DOX, a nonspecific MMP inhibitor. Additionally, the increases of mechanical allodynia and orofacial hyperalgesia were attenuated by the same treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate parents' knowledge on safe transport of children in motor vehicles and motorcycles. METHODS: Cross-sectional study that applied a questionnaire to parents and guardians who were accompanying children in the waiting room for outpatient public and private services. To evaluate knowledge on safe transport of children, the recommendations of the Brazilian Association on Traffic Medicine were used. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests for categorical and numerical variables respectively, being significant p<0.05. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 248 parents, 119 from private and 129 public medical services. Among the issues related to motorcycles, 76 percent of those who usually carry children in this vehicle answered correctly the minimum age allowed for that, however more than 30 percent of them did not know the safest position to carry children on motorcycles. Considering the automobile transport, the question with the highest percentage of correct answers was about the minimum age to use the front seat, with 64 percent of correct answers. In other issues, the percentage of correct answers ranged from 24 to 46 percent. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the studied population about safe transport of children in motor vehicles is poor, especially regarding the use of the restraint system, the prerequisites for front seat use, as well the age and the correct form of transporting children on motorcycles.

ABSTRACT

Prediction equations were obtained for the apparent metabolizable energy (EMAn) values of energetic feedstuffs used in broiler chicken diets by meta-analysis. A bibliographical review of the studies carried out in Brazil was performed to collect information concerning energy values and chemical composition (CP, EE, MM, CF, NDF, and ADF) of feedstuffs. The effects of gender (male, female and mixed), age (1st and 2nd week, 3rd and 4th week, 5th and 6th week, and older 6th weeks or indefinite), and the metabolism assay methodology (excrete total collection or forced fed + excrete total collection) were also considered, constituting a factorial scheme (3x4x2). The stepwise procedure was used to study the association among equation variables by their importance, and Proc Reg (SAS) was used to fit the multiple linear regression model. The equations which best estimated the EAMn of the energetic feedstuffs were AME = 4,371.18 - 26.48CP + 30.65EE - 126.93MM - 52.26CF - 25.14NDF + 24.40FDA (R²=0.81) and AME = 4,205.23 + 30.58EE - 130.35MM - 58.29CF - 28.31NDF + 16.71NDA (R²=0.81). NDF and ADF variables were important in the equations, influencing the feedstuffs energetic values.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Acute metabolic acidosis potentiates the nephrotixicity of aminoglycosides by impairing the adequate excretion of ammonium and titratable acidity. The present study assesses distal tubular function after aminoglycoside administration in the rat. Two aminoglycosides, gentamicin and netilmicin were given to rats either in low doses equivalent to those used clinically (BG4 and BN5 groups) or in doses ten times higher (BG40 and BN50). The rats were subjected to acute metabolic alkalosis and the pCO2 of urine was continuously evaluated. the regression lines obtained by plotting the differences between urine and blood pCO2 as a function of urinary HCO3 in low dose models were simsilar to those obtained for the control group. However, the slopes obtained for BG40 and BN50 were significantly different from the control, suggesting an impairment of H+ secretion
